"When we first met I already had a child," Jolie tells the new issue of Italian Vanity Fair. "We didn’t live together and we adopted Zahara. Usually people fall in love and and everything revolves around people getting married. Children are an afterthought."

"We’ve done everything the wrong way around, but sooner or later the children will ask, you know, they watch films and ask questions," Jolie, 33, said. "They want to know why Shrek and Fiona got married and we haven’t." (Pitt has said he won’t wed Jolie until gay marriage is made legal.)

Jolie and Pitt are parents to Maddox, 7, Pax, 4, Zahara, 3, and Shiloh, 2 and 3-month-old twins, Knox and Vivienne.

http://readwritenow.files.wordpress.com/2008/03/obama_sc_04_01_2007-731285.jpgWASHINGTON (Reuters) – Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has opened up a 10-point lead over Republican opponent John McCain two weeks before the November 4 U.S. election, according to Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll released on Tuesday.

The poll found 52 percent of voters favor Obama compared with 42 percent for McCain, up from a 6-point Obama edge two weeks ago, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The 10-point lead is the largest in the Journal/NBC poll to date and represents a steady climb for Obama since early September, when the political conventions concluded with the candidates in a statistical tie, the newspaper reported.

The poll also found that the popularity of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has fallen. Voters are less likely to see the Republican vice presidential nominee in a positive light, and much more likely to report negative feelings, the Wall Street Journal said.

Forty-seven percent view Palin negatively, compared with 38 percent who see her in a positive light.

Fifty-five percent of voters say Palin is not qualified to be president, up from 50 percent two weeks ago.

The poll of 1,159 registered voters was conducted from Friday to Monday and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.9 percentage points.

Dunham, 85, practically raised Obama while his mother studied abroad. She’s the "white grandmother" he mentions in speeches, a "trailblazer in her own right," the BBC wrote, "having risen from a lowly position to be one of the first women vice-presidents of the Bank of Hawaii."

When it was clear he would win the Democratic nomination for president, Obama said that night was for her. His grandmother, Obama told a crowd of excited fans, is the one "who poured everything she had into me and who helps to make me the man I am today."

He explains in his book "Dreams from My Father," "We call my grandmother Tutu, Toot for short; it means "grandparent" in Hawaiian, for she decided on the day I was born that she was still too young to be called Granny."

Access Hollywood

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Angelina Jolie has revealed that her relationship with partner Brad Pitt has had such a deep effect on her life, that his behavior influenced her to get pregnant, despite her intense support of adoption.

"I think one of the life changing things that he did, one of many, is that I was absolutely never going to get pregnant. I never felt that it was the right thing to do," Angelina told W magazine for a new cover story, with photos shot by Brad. "Now I wouldn’t trade that experience for the world. It taught me a lot about life, just the process of it, and now we have three other beautiful children that wouldn’t otherwise be here."

LONDON (Reuters) - The key to Madonna’s enduring appeal has been to stay one step ahead of the game in the famously fickle world of pop.

But a successful musical career does not always equal harmony at home, and the performer announced on Wednesday that she and British film director Guy Ritchie were divorcing eight years after their fairytale wedding in Scotland.

Madonna was married once before to actor Sean Penn in the 1980s.

Few expect the latest personal setback to get in the way of Madonna’s stellar career for long. On Wednesday and Thursday she is due to perform gigs in Boston on her "Sticky & Sweet" world tour, before moving on to Canada.

At 50, fans say Madonna is moving and shaking like someone half her age, testament to the rigorous training that underlines the drive and professionalism of a woman who rose from the humble surroundings of a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan to international fame and fabulous riches.

But it is not just stamina and determination that have got the singer to where she is today. Perhaps more than anything else it is her ability to reinvent herself.

From the raunchy videos condemned by the Vatican to "Mamma-Donna" the mother of two heading up the aisle in 2000, she has had more image make-overs than David Bowie — and always stayed one step ahead of her detractors.

Only last year she was shaking up the music industry again, leaving her long-time record label Warner and joining concert promotion company Live Nation in a long-term deal reported to be worth $120 million.

Having earned tens of millions of dollars on the road already, she was among the first major musical acts to react to the fact that touring was making more money than recording.

RITCHIE’S UPS AND DOWNS

After a quarter of a century at the summit of pop, she and Ritchie, 40, have amassed a fortune estimated at $525 million, of which the vast majority comes from Madonna.

Ritchie’s film making career has been a rollercoaster ride, starting promisingly with crime caper "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" in 1998 followed by another acclaimed picture "Snatch" two years later.

But after that he struggled, directing his wife in the critically mauled "Swept Away" in 2002 before making the commercial flop "Revolver."

The studios have put their faith in his ability, though, and he is aiming for a major comeback with "Sherlock Holmes," a big-budget adaptation of the Arthur Conan Doyle stories starring Robert Downey Jr. as the Victorian-era super sleuth.

True to her reputation as a career chameleon, Madonna has also tried her hand at movies. Although her turn in "Swept Away" was treated with derision, she did win a Golden Globe award in 1996 for the musical film "Evita."

It was not surprising that Madonna begged director Alan Parker to give her the title role in a film which depicted the life of Argentine heroine Eva Peron. In many ways, Peron’s rise from poverty to president’s wife was a mirror image of the pop singer. Both clawed their way to fame from obscurity.

Madonna has also worked behind the camera, directing her first feature, "Filth and Wisdom," which received mixed reviews.

BIG FAMILY

Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone was born in Bay City, Michigan on August 16, 1958.

She was the third child born into a large, devout Italian-Catholic family. Her mother died when she was six. Her strict disciplinarian father brought them up single-handedly.

"I became an overachiever to get approval from the world," she confessed. "I didn’t have a mother so I needed the whole world around me."

After studying dance, she left Michigan for Manhattan at the age of 19. She clutched just $35 in her hand and told the taxi driver "Take me where everything is." He dropped her in Times Square.

The big breakthrough came in 1984 when she signed a record deal and made her first two big hits "Like a Virgin" and "Holiday." She was on her way.

The next year she married Penn and landed one of her most memorable screen roles in "Desperately Seeking Susan."

But her stormy marriage only lasted four years and her screen duet with Penn in "Shanghai Surprise" bombed.

Madonna thrives on controversy.

In her 1990 "Blonde Ambition" tour, she famously wore a Jean Paul Gaultier conical bra and covered the stage in religious imagery. The Vatican called it "one of the most satanic shows in the history of humanity."

In 1992, her erotic "Sex" book, in which she posed nude in a string of provocative poses, was panned.

Aid groups in Malawi criticized her decision in 2006 to adopt a boy whose mother had died, saying the authorities there had bent the rules to accommodate the superstar, and the adoption was challenged in court.

Not for the first time, Madonna prevailed and the adoption went through.

Madonna has two other children — son Rocco with Ritchie, and daughter Lourdes, born in 1996, from her relationship with fitness trainer Carlos Leon.

ATLANTA, Georgia (AP) — When brothers Alex and Stephen Kendrick were looking for inspiration for their third feature-length film, they turned to God for help.

Kirk Cameron, known best for his role on

Kirk Cameron, known best for his role on "Growing Pains," stars in in the movie as Caleb Holt.

"To be honest, I prayed about it," Alex Kendrick said. "I said, ‘God, would you give me an idea that will impact all of our culture.’ "

While he was out jogging and praying one day, the idea for "Fireproof" came to him. He footed it over to his brother’s house about a mile away and told him the story: A firefighter who lives by the mantra "never leave your partner behind" at work is about to do just that in his personal life.

The movie, which has a strong faith-based message and was made with a budget of just $500,000 and a volunteer cast that includes former teen idol Kirk Cameron, has been surprisingly successful. Its opening on 839 screens two weeks ago was strong enough to propel it to No. 4 at the box office.

It stayed in the top 10 last weekend, at No. 8, and has earned an estimated $13.6 million and spawned a best-selling book that started as a prop.

"The Love Dare," written by the Kendricks, was at No. 8 on Amazon’s best-seller list Thursday afternoon. In the movie, Caleb Holt (Cameron) receives the book from his father, who tells him to follow its 40-day challenge to save his marriage.

Prompted by repeated questions during production about whether the book really existed, the Kendricks sat down last spring and prayed to God to help them write it.

"It’s an answer to prayer. I don’t think I’m smart enough to come up with something like that on my own," Alex Kendrick said in a telephone interview. "I do think these are legitimate principles and not something we pulled out of thin air."

The brothers said the overwhelmingly positive response to the film has been rewarding and cited the more than a thousand e-mailed stories posted on the movie’s Web site from people who have seen it and been affected by it.

They acknowledged the movie is not as artistically or technically fancy as many films out of Hollywood, but say its appeal is its relatable message that things aren’t always easy but marriage is worth fighting for. That message is conveyed by the title, which takes on a double meaning given that the main character is a firefighter.

"It doesn’t mean when something is fireproof that fire will never come, but when fire comes, it can withstand it," Alex Kendrick said. "Every marriage will go through trials, or fire, as we say, and what’s going to happen on the other side of that fire? Will your marriage survive?"

The Kendricks grew up in suburban Atlanta, Georgia, and now live in Albany in southwestern Georgia, where they are associate pastors at Sherwood Baptist Church. Along with the church’s senior pastor, Michael Catt, they created Sherwood Pictures, a production company, in 2002 and scraped together $20,000 to put out their first film, "Flywheel," in 2003.

With a budget of $100,000, the company released "Facing the Giants" in 2006. That film ended up grossing more than $10 million. Cameron, best known for the TV sitcom "Growing Pains," saw the film and called the Kendricks to say he loved it and would be interested in working with them.

After auditioning several actors for the role of Caleb, the brothers decided to give Cameron a call, but they were skeptical. They saw the lead as a big burly guy, but Cameron flawlessly executed nine of the script’s most difficult scenes during his audition and won them over.

Cameron, who turns 38 Sunday and has six kids after 17 years of marriage, said he is very aware of the challenges of marriage and wanted to be a part of something that encourages people to fight for that union.

"This is a movie that gives people hope and inspires them that they can save their marriages — that love, in the end, won’t fail, if you pour your heart and your time and your energy into the things that really matter," Cameron said.

The rest of the cast was made up of volunteers from the church. Most of the budget was spent on equipment and paying a handful of professionals to operate that equipment. The Kendricks, who plan to continue making films, wrote the script together, and 38-year-old Alex directed and edited the film, while 35-year-old Stephen worked as a producer. Catt served as executive producer.

Part of the film’s success can be attributed to a marketing plan that targeted areas with large and enthusiastic faith-based communities. Distributor Samuel Goldwyn Films had a pretty good idea of where it might do well based on where "Facing the Giants" succeeded, said head of distribution Michael Silberman.

It has done best so far in the Atlanta region as well as cities such as Dallas, Texas, Tampa, Florida, Orlando, Florida, and Charlotte, North Carolina, Silberman said.

A marketing technique honed during the "Facing the Giants" release, the "action squad," helped bring the movie to some smaller markets that might not otherwise have seen it on opening weekend. If the film wasn’t set to play within 30 miles of a community, an action squad could bring it there by buying 1,000 tickets.

The success may also be driven by the fact that the Christian community, including the Kendricks, is also starved for movies that reflect its values, which often is not the case with Hollywood fare.

"We want to go enjoy good movies, but we rarely ever see the kind of movie that we have been longing to see, where there’s a moral message that’s communicated, it’s clean, you can watch it with your kids, your wife, your grandmother, but you can laugh and cry and be entertained," Stephen Kendrick said.
